Dirks looked around the living room with a sense of pride. What had started out as a huge mess this morning was now a neat and tidy home. He’d righted the living room and sorted through the magazines and newspapers that had been strewn across the floor. The sofa and chair cushions had been tossed but luckily not slashed or ripped. As he came across things he was unsure about, he asked Dani or her mom, Delores, or Dee as she preferred, what he should do with it. A couple of times Dani, clearly frustrated and edgy, told him she had some thoughts about where some of this stuff should be shoved, but Dee hushed her and Dirks laughed. Personally, he’d like to shove some of that stuff somewhere too. Once they caught that jackass Jake, he was going to make sure he got his feelings across, in no uncertain terms.

But, he also had to admit, it was nice listening to Dani and Dee chat away in the kitchen about nothing in particular, but giggling and having as nice a time as they could while making lemonade out of these lemons Dani was given.

“Wow, you’ve done a great job in here Dirks.” He turned to see Dani surveying the room, a beautiful smile on her face. “You’re hired. You can come and clean my place anytime.”

Dirks chuckled. “While I don’t mind helping you Dani, I am not a cleaning person, so I’ll respectfully decline.”

She chuckled but her eyes looked into his and her smile faded. She walked to him and he held out his arms, ready to fold her in a hug. It had been a tough day for her.

“Thank you for your help today. It means a lot to me.”

He kissed the top of her head, “Anytime honey. But, hopefully not like this.”

“I agree. I’ve wrestled so many angry emotions today I don’t know which way is up. Thank goodness you and Momma were here to make me laugh.”

“Yeah. I know you’ve been struggling. We’ll figure all this out.”

“Well now, look at you two. Does a mama’s heart good to see her baby and a good man get together.”

Dirks looked over Dani’s head at Delores as she entered the living room from the hallway. He smiled when Dani groaned.

“What do you two beautiful ladies say to dinner out on me?”

Delores smiled her biggest smile, “That’s sweet of you Jeremy, but I put a beef roast in the crock pot before I left home this morning. Danny will be hungry and I know you two are, so I’ll respectfully decline your invitation this time and turn it around to you. We’d love it if you’d join us for dinner tonight.”

“Beef roast sounds mighty delicious, so I accept.”

“Good. Now, I’m taking off so I can clean up then finish up dinner. You two come on by whenever you’re ready.”

Dani walked over and hugged her mom. Dirks smiled as he watched. Delores rubbed her hands up and down Dani’s back as they hugged and she whispered something in her ear.
